Meet Coach Derrel Thomas

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Derrel Thomas dreamed of playing for the Dodgers. The number one pick in the 1969 draft, Thomas was known as a utility player, playing in all positions except for pitcher during his 14-year MLB career. As a member of the 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers, Thomas and his teammates defeated the New York Yankees to win the World Series, bringing his childhood dream to fruition.

Following in the steps of his idol, Dodger alum Maury Wills, Thomas began his coaching career shortly after his playing days ended in 1985.

“I always thought I’d be a good roving instructor because I always got a lot of good information from all the managers and coaches I played for,” he said. “I played all eight positions in the Major Leagues and I thought I could share that with others.”

After managing the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League in 1987, Thomas coached at the high school and junior college levels as well as for the Reno Silver Sox in California League. He also scouted on behalf of several MLB teams.

When the opportunity to purchase his own team arose, Thomas saw a chance to pursue his love for the game in a different way – as an owner.

As the owner and manager of the Rancho Belago Rockets Thomas is responsible for day-to-day operations, in addition to his coaching duties.
